- Classifying information
- =======================
-
- One important feature of hypertext is the organization of ideas in
- the covered material into logical classification schemes or
- taxonomies. Good classification schemes tend to have:
-
- - 4-6 subcategories at every level <jump>
- - exceptions to the classification are hard to find <jump>
- - subtopics all show clear commonalities and boundaries <jump>
- - subtopics are ordered by size or importance <jump>
- - many ways to reach the same information <jump>
- - most files are single screen in size (22 lines max) <jump>
-
- Besides being the menus for reaching the desired material and
- because such classification schemes also clearly show relationships
- between ideas, they become the metaphor (or thought patterns)
- adopted by users whenever thinking about the contained material.
